Joyce Kashou, Program Officer at the Muwatin Institute for Democracy and Human Rights, participated in the “Gender, Peace, and Conflict” course organized by the Peace Research Institute - Oslo (PRIO) from 27-29 May 2024. This course comes within the framework of the “Partnership for Peace: Better Higher Education for Resilient Societies (NORHED II)” project. This project is jointly implemented by the University of Oslo in Norway, Birzeit University in Palestine, the University of Los Andes in Colombia, the African School of Economics in Benin, Makerere University in Uganda, and Mekelle University in Ethiopia.

Participants in this course discussed theories and approaches to studying gender dimensions in conflicts and peace processes, and their mechanisms. The course also addressed multiple issues such as international normative frameworks on women, peace and security, international normative frameworks on youth in the context of the peace and security, the link between gender inequality in the risk of conflict, sexual violence in armed conflicts, children born as a result of wars, and masculinity and its role in violence. The course offered participants the opportunity to engage in discussions with both researchers and diplomats involved in peace and conflict issues.

A diverse group of participants, including researchers, PhD students, and human rights activists from partner universities and other institutions, participated in the course.
