President of Birzeit University. A historian who wrote on Palestinian peasants and merchants and on women and family life. He also writes on the politics and ethics of knowledge production, and on academic freedom. Holds the inaugural Mahmoud Darwish Chair for Palestinian Studies at Brown University.
